Naturopathic doctors (NDs) are clinically trained in natural medical therapeutics and subscribe to a philosophy of Vis medicatrix naturae---nature is the healer of all diseases. Their training is a unique marriage between cutting edge science based medicine and age old healing modalities. Naturopathic physicians are trained in conventional medical diagnoses and treatment of disease and believe the path to wellness lies first in identifying the underlying physiological imbalances causing sickness and ill-health. When the cause is identified the whole person is treated in accordance to the nature of the disturbance in their overall health.

Naturopathic doctors go through vigorous medical training. Educational involves a premed undergraduate degree and a 4 year medical program inclusive of clinical training. The curriculum is heavy in conventional medical diagnostics, clinical medical sciences and natural therapeutics. Naturopathic doctors have to pass state medical boards and are recognized as primary care doctors in 13 states.

  The Naturopathic Tenets:

First Do No Harm - primum non nocere

It is the intention of naturopathic medicine to use the least invasive treatment for your health concerns. This means that your doctor will start with recommendations to bolster health and use the most gentle, yet effective treatments for your recovery.

The Healing Power of Nature - vis medicatrix naturae

Perhaps the largest difference between naturopathic and conventional doctors is the belief of the power of nature and its ability to heal. Through out medical journals there is a plethora of evidence that supports the application of the products of nature to heal. Scientific research in a variety of medical fields has revealed the medical benefits of botanical, nutritional and other natural modalities to in the treatment of both acute and chronic disease. Often times the research reveals equivalent results in a natural product with few to no side effects over the synthetic equivalent. Perhaps nature does know best!

  Treat the Cause- tolle causam

while it is important to manage symptoms it is unwise to ignore the nature of the problem. Treating the symptoms typically does not resolve the symptoms for the symptoms themselves are but an expression of a deeper disturbance. This disturbance, which causes dysfunction further up the line, is the answer to the name of the disease. Poor nutrition, differing forms of chronic stress, toxic exposure, inactivity, perceptual irregularities and vital mistunements to the system are some popular naturopathic causative agents. Naturopathic medicine asks what is at the root of symptoms and what must we change to remove the obstacles to poor health.

Treat the Whole Person - tolle totum

Illness appears to be isolated to one location at a time in conventional medical thought. Naturopathic medicine sees the body as an integrated system. Just treating what appears to be the focal point is inadequate. To really bring a cure one must addresses all levels of the expression of the disturbance found with in the individual.

The Physician is a Teacher - docere

The physician's major role is to educate, empower, and motivate patients to take responsibility for their own healthcare. Creating a healing partnership with patients provides the most therapeutic value. As teacher, the naturopathic doctor constantly works toward graduating their clients to a self-sufficient health-care.
